BYD – Build Your Dreams – is a Chinese manufacturer that has made headway in the electrification space as one of the few Asian marques offering electrification across its entire range of cars. As one of the largest battery manufacturers in the world, it is perhaps no surprise that plug-in hybrids and fully electrified models make up the majority of its offerings.
Now the automaker has introduced the Atto 2 DM-i (plug-in hybrid) to play in the compact crossover SUV segment and slug it out with the likes of the Chery Tiggo Cross CSH HEV, Omoda C5 SHS HEV and the Toyota Corolla Cross HEV, among others. Design-wise, the Atto 2 DM-i comes in a handsome, if a little generic, styling that should see it blend in with the rest of the cohort in this space.
Dimensions & Features
In terms of dimensions, it boasts a 4,330mm overall length; 2,620mm wheelbase, 1,830mm width and 1,675mm height. This has yielded a very roomy interior, while boot space is an impressive 475 litres in standard guise and 1335 litres with the rear seats folded. Two trim levels are on offer in the form of Comfort and Dynamic, the latter adding items such as a 50W wireless charger, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, adaptive cruise control, front park distance monitoring, and electric folding mirrors. Standard equipment across the models includes keyless entry, a panoramic sunroof, an 8.8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Drivetrain
Powering the model is a Super Hybrid system comprising a 1.5-litre engine with 72kW and 122Nm, augmented by its Blade Battery technology that boasts a 40kWh battery good for a combined system output of 145kW and 300Nm. Claimed pure electric range is 40km, while the combined driving range is said to be an impressive 930km, all the while the petrol engine sips at 5.1l/100km. Acceleration, meanwhile, is 9.1 seconds to 100km/h from rest and a top speed pegged at 180km/h.
Driving impression
Driving the model at its Gauteng launch recently, imparted a vehicle with decent comfort and an NVH (Noise Vehicle Harshness) quotient that was above average. While not the most powerful model in its segment, it still delivers more than ample for daily cut and thrust traffic, while highway speeds were also dealt with deft. Handling is neutral for the most part, so placing the vehicle on the road is a simple exercise.
Verdict
Overall, the model makes a strong case for itself in a very busy segment of the market with a vast choice of options. At a starting price of R449,900 for the Comfort model and topping out at R489,900 for the Dynamic model, the Atto 2 DM-i is relatively well priced and should bring another worthy alternative to the hybrid market.
